What does thermometer mean
The thermometer is an instrument used to measure the temperature of the human body and other elements or the manifestations of nature. The word comes from the greek terms “thermos” and “metron”, what mean heat and measure respectively. That is to say, according to its etymology, the thermometer would be a heat meter.
Although other temperature-measuring instruments are recorded before, the traditional and most famous is a glass tube containing mercury and it was invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1714. It operates so that the volume is modified with respect to the temperature in which it’s exposed and the oscillation is reflected in a graduated scale.
Before Fahrenheit, Galileo Galilei had built the Thermoscope, an instrument that uses the contraction of air to cool to generate an effect on an amount of water contained in a tube. This invention is taken as the first step towards the discovery of the thermometer proposed by the German physicist.
Types of Thermometers
In addition to the classic mercury thermometer and those used clinically in people, there are other types of these temperature gauges. They could be clasified mainly in two types: electrical thermometers and non-electrical thermometers.
The first are like the tradicional thermometer and they use mercury in glass or vapor pressure. The electrical ones use semiconductors like diodes and resistors in them.
These are thermometers used for high temperatures. They are used especially in the factories that have to do with the foundry. That is to say, in glass, ceramics, among others productions. There are several types depending on their operation.
These thermometers are employed for measuring the temperatura of gases and liquids. It comprises of an element which is build by putting two metallic materials together.
When the temperatura is deducted, the metallic elements want to expand and due to their different compositions their rate of expasion also varies. So this stress is reflected in the element which is in the form of a flat spring and their motion is reflected by the indicator.
It’s a thermometer that works with metals that have electrical resistance. The termal vibrations hinder the flow of electrons in a metal. As the temperature boost, the resistance also do it.
They are known for their high accuracy. However, they’re expensive than liquid in glass thermometers.
It’s a thermometer that measure the difference in temperatura between two points. It’s made by different metals that are joined at the sensor rate. The difference between temperaturas is calculated by calculating the difference in voltages between the metals.
They are the modern version. These thermometers use the electrical circuits to transform into numbers the voltage oscillations obtained to show the result of the temperature in a display.
They don’t use mercury. They contain thermo sensors like thermistor inside the tip which senses the temperature and provides instant and accurate results especially over the body temperatura range.
The termistor could be another type of thermometer. It’s basically a resistor whose resistance changes with the change in temperature.
By not using mercury as the traditional thermometer, the digital thermometer don’t contaminate the environment. In addition, during technological advances, digital thermometers can be faster, easier to use and, in some cases, the best option, because some have memory and alarm.
There are no official records on who invented the first digital thermometer, but we know that this artifact is a construction or influence of other digital items that became popular during the twentieth century. An example of this is the digital clock, Liquid Crystal and LCD screens.
